About Me

I am back working in a bookshop, thank goodness. It turns out it really is where I'm supposed to be. Nowadays you can find me in the Web Orders department at Foyles - I can't quite believe my luck. The PhD is temporarily on hold while I get used to full time work again. It's still about women and food in early modern Britain (more here).

I used to review for Waterstones under the pseudonym Jane Sharp. She was a midwife in 17th century England, and was the first woman to publish a midwifery book in English, The Midwives Book, in 1671. I wrote about her book for my undergraduate dissertation. My twitter name is @janesharp1671 in her honour.

I love museums and cats and dancing and Adam Ant and stories. Lots of stories.

Super Special Summer Picnic Book Chase

My nieces and nephews and I have a monthly book club, called Book Chase (although it sometimes gains an extra 's' to become Book Chasse). The rules are simple: we all bring something we've read during the last month, talk about it to each other, and eat snacks. We live tweet each meeting with the hashtag BookChase. Sometimes, when we remember, we Storify all the tweets too. This month, we remembered!

This book illustrates how special a thing it is to have people send you books out of the blue; it's a privilege and a pleasure. I wouldn't have known about this book, let alone read and loved it, if it hadn't landed in my letterbox. I'm …
